What Worsens Parkinson’s Disease? Setting Goals and Staying Motivated in the New Year

HI Fighter!

The new year is almost here, and it’s the perfect time to take a fresh look at your health, set meaningful goals, and establish habits that help you thrive as a senior or as someone living with Parkinson’s disease. While we often focus on what improves health, it’s equally important to be aware of what might worsen your symptoms or overall well-being, and how to address those factors. Let’s dive into motivation for the year ahead, the power of goal-setting, and a crucial but often overlooked topic: urinary tract infections (UTIs).

New Year, New Goals: Staying Accountable Together

The start of the year is an opportunity to reflect on what you want to achieve. Having clear, actionable goals can boost motivation and provide a sense of accomplishment. Here are some common goals our clients set, and how we can help you stay accountable:

  • Get Back to Golfing in the Spring: Whether you’re looking to rebuild stamina or refine your swing, we can create a personalized exercise plan to prepare you for the course.

  • Improve Balance: Both seniors and those with Parkinson’s can benefit from targeted exercises designed to enhance stability and confidence in movement.

  • Build Stamina: Whether it’s for daily activities, keeping up with grandchildren, or a specific hobby, improving endurance is possible with the right approach.

By committing to these or similar goals, you’ll have something positive to work toward, and we’ll be here to guide and cheer you on every step of the way.

The Overlooked Culprit: UTI's in Seniors

While setting goals is critical, it’s equally important to monitor your health for factors that might worsen your symptoms or overall quality of life. One of the most common — yet often overlooked — culprits is a urinary tract infection (UTI).

I can’t count the number of times clients have told us their symptoms worsened, or new symptoms appeared, only to discover weeks or even months later that they had a UTI. Symptoms like increased confusion, fatigue, difficulty moving, or a decline in balance can sometimes be linked to this simple but sneaky infection. Left untreated, a UTI can wreak havoc on your body and exacerbate existing conditions.

The good news? Getting checked for a UTI is one of the simplest and least invasive tests available. And guess what? We now offer UTI tests right here at HQ. If you’re noticing your symptoms feeling “off” or worse than usual, don’t hesitate to ask us about it the next time you’re in. Staying proactive about your health can make all the difference.

Why Accountability Matters

Achieving your goals and maintaining good health is easier with support. When you share your objectives with someone who understands your journey, you’re more likely to follow through. That’s where we come in. Our team is dedicated to helping you stay on track and adjust your plan as needed.

Your Next Steps

  1. Set a Goal: Decide what you want to achieve this year. Make it specific and measurable.

  2. Take Action: Join our classes or ask about personalized programs to address your goals.

  3. Monitor Your Health: If your symptoms feel off, consider a UTI test. It’s a quick step that could save you from unnecessary discomfort.

Let’s make 2025 a year of progress and positivity. Together, we can tackle your goals and help you feel your best. Reach out to us today to get started if you aren't already a member— and don’t forget to ask your doctor for a UTI test the next time your feeling off.

Yours in health,

Christine
